Just last week, the Vita got its first "Killer App": YouTube. Was it worth the wait? Read more after the jump.
The Vita launched in the US back in late February. The Vita was chock full of features. Two cameras, accelerometers, wifi, a 3G option, a killer touch screen, a rear touch pad, dual analogs sticks.... I could go on, but this is not a Vita hardware review. While the Vita had all these features, it was still lacking some major components: Flash support and/or a YouTube streaming app. But last week, Sony released the long overdue YouTube app.
Let me cut to it. The app is nice. It has loads of features I didn't even know I wanted. Within the app you can like or dislike a video, favorite it, add a comment, read the description, and even view related videos. On the first screen of the app, you see all the new videos from the channels that you subscribe to.
Another thing I noticed, is there are no adds that interrupt the video. Nice one Sony!
What you can't do is go to a specific channel or subscribe to a new one; features I hope Sony adds with an update. Another nice thing would be if the app integrated itself within the Vita's browser so if you come across a youtube video embedded in a website, you could just tap and hold the video to open it in the app. But we'll see if this ever gets added or if full flash integration comes to the vita...
For now, the app is a must have. The Vita uses Wireless N, so HD videos load very well (if you have a decent router speed, that is). Not to mention, the HD looks amazing on the Vita's slick 5" OLED screen.
Now you can look at cats. But that isn't the best part. They are cats in HD.
SCREENS!
